Janet Pomeroy Center is to provide recreation and vocational opportunities for people with
disabilities that encourage self-expression, promote personal achievement, and lead to greater
independence.
We are pleased to announce that RCH (Recreation Center for the Handicapped) has changed its
name to "The Janet Pomeroy Center" in honor of the
incredible woman who founded the Center over fifty years ago.
In 1952, Janet Pomeroy founded the Recreation
Center for the Handicapped to provide programs and services to families with developmentally
disabled children. Janet started with just two volunteers and six teens in one room in the old
Fleishhacker Pool Building. Her unwavering enthusiasm and commitment led to the program
expanding to its present location on Skyline Boulevard, between the San Francisco Zoo and Lake
Merced. Today, the Center provides recreational and vocational opportunities to more than 2,000
children and adults each week.
With your support, The Janet Pomeroy Center will keep Janet's dream alive and continue to
accomplish our mission: to provide recreation and vocational opportunities for participants
through programs that encourage self-expression, promote personal achievement, and lead to
greater independence.
Our facilities include program rooms, a therapeutic swimming pool,
gymnasium, computer lab, kitchen, stage and multipurpose room, playground, day camp, and community
garden center. We're primarily funded through state and federal agencies, while grants, private
contributions, and special events are increasingly-important sources of support for our programs.
