Adult Development Department

The Adult Development Department serves over seventy individuals with profound and severe developmental
disabilities. Our services focus on providing assistance to participants in four main areas:
Vocational Training
The pre-vocational and vocational programs promote participant independence, responsibility, and money
management. Many of our trainings are in collaboration with Vocational and Leisure Services (VLS). ADD
clients run the Janet Pomeroy Center's onsite cafe one day a week and are paid for their time. Additional
food service training is provided one day a week, teaching clients to perform basic cashier and food
preparation skills. ADD also provides the Janet Pomeroy Center's recycling services including: glass, cans,
mixed paper and cardboard as well as document shredding. Other active trainings include laundry, vending
machine stocking, mailings and flyer distribution. Money management is taught through coin recognition,
and shopping trips.
Communication
The ability to communicate is the cornerstone of the ADD program. Through the use of adaptive and
augmentative communication devices and systems our participants learn to make choices and express
themselves. Janet Pomeroy Center staff are trained to teach and assist participants to communicate by the
use of picture books, object symbols and/or basic signing. In addition participants receive access to the
Computer Lab, Pen Pal Club and group discussions to develop awareness, listening and socialization skills.
Independent Living Skills
Staff assist participants in learning many self-care skills including face and hand washing and tooth
brushing. The Janet Pomeroy Center provides adaptive dining equipment and training in order to help
participants gain greater independence and confidence. Specifically, the Janet Pomeroy Center offers
sensory and range of motion opportunities by repositioning individuals in bean bags and swinging skychairs
which provide much needed vestibular stimulation for those in wheelchairs or with limited body awareness.
Additionally, interested participants can choose to attend beauty and grooming classes.
Recreation
Recreation activities are a valuable portion of the ADD program. Group leaders and specialists provide
adaptive physical education activities, gardening, community outings, arts and crafts, movement, drama and
dancing. Other activities available include weekly sing-a-longs, socials and story telling. During the
school year, participants enjoy monthly performances by The Conservatory of Music. Special events include
multi-cultural and traditional holiday programs. Participants have the opportunity to submit and show
their artwork in various art shows in-center as well as in the community.
