Four attributes describe The Center: RESPECT, INDEPENDENCE, ACHIEVEMENT, and CARING. These four are held together by the strong sense of COMMUNITY that is The Janet Pomeroy Center.

In keeping with the spirit of much of the art work produced and displayed throughout our Center, the logo is meant to create a multitude of impressions and spark the imagination. The bright and lively colors speak of joyous growth for the future. Just as the individuals we serve are central to our mission, central to the logo is the individual who is portrayed standing independently and full of self-respect reaching toward achievement represented by the unfinished star. The star is intentionally left unfinished to signify that the work is always ongoing and that there is achievement upon achievement yet to come. The individual is surrounded by the energy filled circle of a caring community. The outer layer of the logo – the impression of a circle -represents the relationships- the community - formed at The Janet Pomeroy Center. Participant to participant, participants and staff, and also embracing the Janet Pomeroy family of volunteers as well as those who support our mission in so many ways through generous gifts of time, talent and treasure. The open space in the circle reminds us that this community is always open and welcoming to all who want to join. To crown it all is the three word tag line that we believe sums up the mission of The Janet Pomeroy Center: "DISABILITIES BECOMING ABILITIES".

Name Change

We are pleased to announce that RCH (Recreation Center for the Handicapped) has changed its name to "The Janet Pomeroy Center" in honor of the incredible woman who founded the Center over fifty-eight years ago.

In 1952, Janet Pomeroy founded the Recreation Center for the Handicapped to provide programs and services to families with developmentally disabled children. Janet started with just two volunteers and six teens in one room in the old Fleishhacker Pool Building. Her unwavering enthusiasm and commitment led to the program expanding to its present location on Skyline Boulevard, between the San Francisco Zoo and Lake Merced. Today, the Center provides recreational and vocational opportunities to more than 2,000 children and adults each week.

With your support, The Janet Pomeroy Center will keep Janet's dream alive and continue to accomplish our mission: to provide recreational, vocational and educational opportunities for people with disabilities through programs and services that encourage self-expression, promote personal achievement, and lead to greater independence.
